These look amazing on almost everyone and give softness and movement to every hairstyle, regardless of length. If you're looking to try out bangs in 2023, wispy bangs are a great choice. Short hair will be big in 2023, which means we'll be seeing a lot more pixie haircuts with a lot of different variations of the classic look.

It’s a great trend for 2023 because it can be experimented with when it comes to length and all hair types can get involved. “It’s a great retro cut, and I predict a desire from people to be more daring over the next 12 months; it’s fun to style and really enhances features,” he adds. Named after the ‘50s British subculture of the Teddy boys, the cut is short on the sides and longer on the top (and it's full of volume).

Long, Choppy, Textured Bob

Because, actually, fall 2023's biggest hair looks are fairly subdued, featuring sleek buns and ponytails, warm shades, and layered haircuts. Bobs are still very much in vogue, and Syd Hayes predicts that the “box” style will be one of the most popular for 2023. “A sharp shape, that’s striking—less about the layers and more about straight lines and angles.” It’s the epitome of a power haircut.

Similar to curtain bangs, this wispy fringe style is the perfect noncommittal hairstyle change as it grows out more easily than blocky bangs. On set in LA this week for A Big, Bold, Beautiful Journey, which is rumoured to be released next year, Robbie was spotted with a new hairstyle and colour. Instead of her distinctive golden Barbie blonde, Robbie was seen with a new hair colour – also set to be one of this year’s biggest hair colour trends – “old money blonde” with a subtle red hue. The rich, dark, ashy blonde with a hint of copper gives the darker blonde shade more shine as it helps the blonde colour shine when light hits it.

This contemporary take on the classic mullet features a shorter length on the top and sides with longer layers in the back. Unlike its traditional version, the modern mullet is more versatile and customizable, allowing for different lengths, textures, and styling options. It can be worn sleek and polished or styled to be wavy or curly for a more edgy and careless vibe.

Birkin Bangs

Another short haircut you can expect to take off in 2024 is the chin-length bob. Even going from a neck-length hairstyle to this hairstyle is dramatic enough to stop traffic in the best way. Characterized by its jaw-skimming length and chin-framing shape, this look is “short, clean, and playful, while being stylish at the same time,” says Melissa Wade-Smith, a hairstylist based in La Canada Flintridge, California. These bangs are different to your everyday fringe as they have more length on the sides, and are often styled with a slight curl for added volume. It doesn't matter whether you have short, mid-length or long hair, this trend is easy to recreate. Although many people are taking to TikTok to see how to cut curtain bangs themselves, we recommend taking a quick trip to the hairdressers and picking up a good blow dry brush to get that voluminous look at home.

A new hairstyle is also— usually—considerably kinder on the budget than a brand-new summer wardrobe. A layered haircut is great for adding volume, movement, and shape, and framing the face, so if your current style could use a little bit of all of that, incorporate layers that suit your hair type and texture into your look. While we're on the topic of blunt ends, one of celeb hairstylist Weezy's top predictions is the blunt cut, on both short and long hair.

This suggests that Pine could’ve pulled his long locks into a ponytail or took off a hairpiece, like a wig or extensions, after. This conditioner pairs perfectly with the shampoo, maximizing strength and shine. Redway suggests leaving the conditioner in your hair for a few minutes in the shower to provide extra nourishment, much like a mask.

They're incredibly versatile and can be a great way to change up your one-length hair without making a drastic change. The wolf cut can be described as the love child of the shag and mullet and has seen a huge rise in popularity recently thanks to thousands of TikTok users taking scissors to their hair as they try to create the look at home. If you love a cut that will give you volume at the top of your head with some movement and texture near the sides and the bottom, this look may be for you. Loosely resembling the shape of the sea creature it's named after, this cut will give you lots of layers and volume on top with longer, layered pieces that fall on or past your shoulders.

"The heaviness allows for that Parisian air-dried feel when left natural, but you can put a brush through it for a nod to classic '60s glamour," stylist Sean Paul Nother told Glamour. We already told you that mix-and-match hair will be popular in 2023, and the mixie cut — a combination of a mullet and pixie — is one of the hottest combinations of all. "This haircut will be trending in the new year because of its mix of retro and modern vibes," hairstylist Jamie Wiley told Allure, noting that this cut gives both modern and retro vibes. The shag works on many different types of hair, and for 2023, the curly shag is going to be big.

When it comes to haircuts, the stylist predicts more structured cuts with an emphasis on volume — without going over-the-top with texture. Long hair is also on the horizon for 2024, which Polko partially attributes to a simultaneous shift away from overly processed color. This year, expect bangs that are longer than you’ve ever seen before. Fekkai says layers that are slightly uneven and “broken” give this cut a soft and natural appearance.

Hardges says Laura Harrier’s happy medium "long bob" isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. "Anything from super straight to kinky textures can rock this," she says. It’s also a great cut for thicker hair, as the length helps to weigh the volume down a bit. Here, you’ll find all the inspiration you need for fall 2023 hairstyles, colors, and cuts.

In the last six months, #coastalgranddaughter went from 15.2 million views on TikTok to 95.4 million (at the time of publication). An offspring of 2022’s coastal grandmother aesthetic, this lifestyle is a bit more carefree. “This generation gathers with family, embraces greenery, light filled interiors, lighter woods and elevated comfort. Finishes are worn but not overly distressed and forms are softly architectural.” Make use of ginghams, ticking stripes, plaids, and houndstooth, Wolf advises.

Modern Living Room Ideas That'll Upgrade Your Home

Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO. For her Foyer of Enchantment, Scheff installed a custom mural by Hattas Art Studios, a John Richard chandelier dripping with glass leaves, a silk wall covering by Aux Abris, and organic furniture created with Amorph Studio. “I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. California offers the perfect climate and location for relaxed living and homes that blur the lines between indoors and out. The West Coast aesthetic is eclectic and often filled with bohemian touches, natural elements, exquisite vintage and antique furnishings, and plenty of bold art.

Paint It Black

On a smaller scale, consider DIY’ing a warm wood frame for an existing mirror that could use an upgrade, or swapping builder-grade metal drawer pulls with stylish wooden options. While wood paneling was once an outdated trend, interior designer Rob Diaz proves the style can feel modern and trendy. Upgrade your walls by installing wood paneling, whether you go for shiplap, tongue and groove, wainscoting or flat boards. This light-filled living room designed by Reena Sotropa features a wall-mounted TV that blends seamlessly with the modern style. Disguise your TV as a piece of artwork, whether with a beautiful landscape or black-and-white abstract print featured here.

Rethink existing furniture

Many people also asked why the house wasn’t protected, saying that it should have been on some sort of historic list, Dwell said. But according to Rummerfield, Los Angeles has been incredibly lax about granting that sort of designation, passing the onus onto citizens and architectural fans in the community. Since there is no head of preservation in the city government, requests for a property’s historic designation can take years to be addressed. But to everyone else, the word “modern” is simply a shorthand for interiors that feel fresh, inviting, and livable in the here and now. This stark progression of volumes might look straight out of Louis Khan’s playbook, but it was actually designed by architect Christina Seilern as a family vacation home on the Greek island of Pàros. Amid Shingle Style neighbors, design firm Architecture Plus Information (A+I) created this linear Hamptons home.

Portola Paints comes in dozens of shades, from snowy Solaris to cerulean Hacienda to Vintage Black. The guest room’s faux-draped walls and ceiling were painted by decorative artist Agustin Hurtado. Chris Pearson, a fellow artist, painted the floor to mimic the bed coverlets of Pierre Frey’s Sirenes.

The couple have chosen to replace the Zimmerman House with a 15,000-square-foot structure home built in what Dwell said is the “increasingly ubiquitous, though contentious” farmhouse style. While “modern” and “contemporary” are often treated as synonyms and used interchangeably, there is a technical difference between the terms. Living rooms may be dedicated rooms or have open-plan layouts that are combined with dining rooms or share space with kitchens.

The Potter Daniels Manor, the English Tudor Revival–style residence that hosted the 1975 and 1996 showcase houses, has been reimagined with 30 new interior and exterior spaces for the 2024 edition, which is now open until May 19. The Stoic Wall Residence in Kadirur, Kerala, departs from traditional design principles. The extensive footprint, exceeding 680 sqm, carefully accommodates the site’s irregular contours, existing trees of varying sizes, a subtle northeastern slope, and accessibility from two main roads (east and south). This intricate interplay of natural and physical elements, along with considerations like solar path and seasonal wind patterns, eventually informed the precise positioning of the house. The architects strategically located the primary section on the north side, following an east-west axis to minimize solar heat gain and maximize privacy. Rummerfield likened the situation to  “an endangered animal that just got poached again,” Dwell said.

Chris Pratt has long had his online detractors who’ve dubbed him Hollywood’s “worst Chris.” Now, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” star has angered a new segment of American society — architecture fans and preservationists. Most concrete block (CMU) homes have 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 exterior walls on the 2nd story. Lebanese architect Raëd Abillama created a coastal retreat of faceted volumes for his family. By locating the infinity pool at its base, the views out to the Mediterranean are virtually seamless.

The sweeping canopy of this weekend home, designed by Kovac Design Studio for film and television agent Todd Feldman, unites a series of guest pavilions and shades visitors from the relentless desert heat. “A modern home is a fresh take on an old idea,” says Matt Berman of Workshop/APD. Wake up a white kitchen with a bright nook, as done by Hilary Matt Interiors. Make your space into a jewel box, like this gem of a room from JL design. Take a cue from LP & Co. and make a grand statement with a high-gloss black piano — whether someone in your house can actually play or not.

In other words, it's not just a room—it's part of your home's culture. You deserve a living room that's comfortable and stylish—whatever that means to you. From placing the rug to choosing a sofa, there's a lot designers know from experience that makes these spaces look and feel pulled together. That's why we've gathered gorgeous, modern living room ideas from design experts to help you create exactly what you want. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug.

From Santa Barbara to Silicon Valley, these residences from the AD archives showcase luxurious amenities, expansive views, and enviable landscaping, with styles that range from sleek and contemporary to stately and traditional. Take a peek at the homes of some of the Golden State’s most stylish residents—tech moguls and Hollywood power players alike. “There used to be a line about Los Angeles that everyone was either a screenwriter or an actor,” says Scotti Sitz, owner of L.A. “I think in some respects, you could start to make the case that everyone here is now an interior designer.” Indeed, the city’s design scene has boomed, with new shops and showrooms sprouting up every month.

When Clark and Altay did market research for Idea House 3, they couldn’t find anything like it in the museum field in the Midwest, or really anywhere. The Detroit designer Aleiya Olu said the closest might be the MoMA Design Store at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Altay, a former creative director for Apple, left her home in Istanbul to come to the Walker because of its historical design reputation, beginning with its original director, the architect Daniel S. Defenbacher.

In the 1940s and ’50s, midcentury-modern design, with its clean lines, warm woods, and bold upholstery hues (often in woolly, menswear-inspired textures), changed the way homes looked. Suddenly, less was more, and decorating a home was about finding a design where form served function—a philosophy that continues to inspire designers to this day. From Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chairs to Charles and Ray Eames’s designs for Herman Miller, countless modernist furnishings have cropped up in the pages of AD through the years. Here, we take you inside a Beverly Hills mansion, a New York City duplex, a Paris apartment, and other homes that display the height of modernist design.

Yes, you can enjoy a mix of both paint and wallpaper in a given space without having to default to an accent wall. “Try layering a printed wallpaper border atop a plain painted wall; a clever way to add character to an otherwise monotonous space,” says designer Angela Harris of Denver-based TRIO. Unlike the cheesy and too-country patterns of yesteryear, companies are releasing contemporary motifs, like the newly launched Lick X Kelly Hoppen CBE wallpaper borders that make minimalism timeless. “There is a return to warmer tones in design with a desire for more of a lived-in, comfortable feel,” Galloway says. “Limewash creates a sense of old mixed with new and allow a room to have a moodier feel.” She encourages the trying out limewash in entryways or powder rooms to give those spaces more depth.

Employ storage in unconventional spaces

Drawing inspiration from the crisscrossing mountains that form the nearby glacial valleys of Glacier National Park, Shadow Box’s silhouette captures the essence of these timeless natural wonders. This luxurious modern mountain house designed by The Ranch Mine is nestled into the rugged terrain of Whitefish, a resort town in the Rocky Mountains of northwest Montana. The region is renowned for its bountiful pine trees, pristine rivers and lakes, majestic mountains, and awe-inspiring glaciers.

As you scroll, you'll find there's something for everyone — even if your design style strays a little more traditional, rustic, boho or coastal. There are endless ways to infuse a touch of modern design into your living room design, no matter the overall feel of the home. For those designing an apartment living room, we've sprinkled in plenty of renter-friendly ideas (think artwork, peel-and-stick wallpaper and ultra-modern furniture). There is some overlap with contemporary house plans with our modern house plan collection featuring those plans that push the envelope in a visually forward-thinking way. It also ties in several other rustic elements, like the natural wood doors. Modern white cabinets, blue barstools, and wallpaper accent make the room feel fresh and updated.

Choose Black and White

The right accessories, like stylish area rugs, colorful accent chairs or statement lighting fixtures can quickly modernize a simple interior. Patterned wallpaper, pops of colorful fabric and a fresh coat of paint can all result in a modern, chic and inviting space. Exposed wood beams and slate gray tile floors both add rustic style to this room. The chain hanging lights with shades are an updated version of farmhouse lighting. But the cool blue cabinets with gold hardware and marble countertops bring modern design into the kitchen.

“Like many other hues, finding the right color means balancing the undertones of the green, as many read a little gray in the late evening light,” Barnes explains. Add extra oomph to even the smallest of rooms by saying yes to style and drama galore, even if the space has an odd layout. In an attic bathroom with sloped, uneven walls and ceilings that made wallpapering impossible, Isabel Ladd of Isabel Ladd Interiors in Lexington, Kentucky, switched gears with peppy paint. “A muralist painted this pattern to look like paper, but we had much more control over where the motifs would land because it was hand painted,” Ladd explains.

Modern Living Rooms Filled With Fresh Design Ideas for 2024

Cynthia Silverman created a nursery fit for a prince or princess, incorporating golden accents and whimsical touches, such as the hot-air balloon light and animal figurines. Designer Ashleigh Miranda focused on juxtaposing technology and earthy elements in her moody media room. “I really wanted to showcase state-of-the-art technology but in a way that was grounded and spoke to our primitive nature.” Cutting-edge tech from Bang & Olufsen, Lutron, and JoshAI is balanced by curvaceous seating and unique art. Designer Karen Billman made Dunn-Edwards’s Skipping Stones the star of her cheery sunroom.

Give a standard mirror a bit of panache by elevating it with resin, gold leaf, or something else entirely. Think creatively about how to maximize your home’s storage capabilities, even if that means making use of the area under your bed—a designer-approved hack! Miami-based designer Tatiana Seikaly of Studio Seikaly, for instance, elevated a bed in a child’s bedroom to create a closet underneath. “The stairs leading up to the bed doubled as drawers for additional storage,” she says of the one-of-a-kind setup. Interior designer Isabel Ladd implemented chartreuse paint on doors to distract from awkward angles of the space.

Olu, who until recently was a contemporary art publicist, said she jumped at the chance to participate in Idea House 3, which reminded her of the Japanese Exhibition House at MoMA from the 1950s. She said it offered her the prestige of having designs appear in a museum as well as exposure to other Midwest designers. The Zak Group out of London helped the Walker design the space to feel like a home with an open floor plan. It is entirely covered in the orange carpet — “Home Depot” orange, Altay explained, a “tongue-in-cheek” reference to home improvement. This is Idea House 3, a new iteration of the Walker museum gift shop, which closed during the pandemic.

She complimented the vibrant hue with metallic accents, Roman shades in a Morris & Co. fabric, and chairs upholstered in a moss green textile by Wesley Hall Fabrics. Below, tour the inspiring rooms and outdoor spaces of the 2024 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. An earlier version of this article misspelled the surname of the Walker Art Center’s director of design programming. The original Idea Houses have since been demolished, and Everyday Art has ceased, but their legacy now lives at Idea House 3.

Not only does this modern space — by designer Kristen Elizabeth — feature floor-to-ceiling windows, but the striking two-story fireplace also maximizes the room's the vertical space. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs.

“Grasscloth or faux skin wallpaper give a desk or a console a totally new look.” Another approach is to simply tackle a piece’s legs. A forecast led by interior designers with a pulse on trends that will be shaping the upcoming year, and beyond.
